Maintaining Easy Steering With Reliable Power Steering Belts

Big box stores and chains might be cheaper, but they can't guarantee the parts you're buying are genuine. Power steering belts transfer rotational force from your engine to the hydraulic pump that assists steering. Your QX80 or Q60 relies on this belt maintaining proper tension and grip to deliver effortless steering response. When power steering belts fail, steering becomes difficult and exhausting, particularly at low speeds.

How Power Steering Belts Enable Assisted Steering

The power steering belt wraps around pulleys connected to your engine's crankshaft and the power steering pump. As the engine runs, the belt spins the pump that pressurizes hydraulic fluid. This pressurized fluid amplifies your steering inputs, making the wheel easy to turn even when parking. The belt must maintain consistent tension to prevent slippage under load. Most power steering belts are either V-belts or multi-ribbed serpentine designs. The belt surface requires proper grip on pulley surfaces to transfer power efficiently. Genuine INFINITI power steering belts are manufactured with specific rubber compounds and reinforcement materials that resist heat, oil contamination, and stretching over time.

What Causes Power Steering Belt Deterioration

Rubber naturally degrades from exposure to engine heat and ozone in the atmosphere. Constant flexing around pulleys creates microscopic cracks that eventually cause belt failure. Oil leaks from nearby seals contaminate the belt surface, reducing friction and causing slippage. Misaligned pulleys create uneven wear patterns that accelerate deterioration. Worn bearings in the power steering pump or alternators increase resistance that strains the belt. Aftermarket belts frequently use cheaper rubber formulations that crack and glaze prematurely compared to genuine replacements.

When Power Steering Belt Replacement Becomes Due

Squealing noises when turning the steering wheel indicate belt slippage on pulleys. Increased steering effort, especially during parking maneuvers, suggests belt problems. Visual inspection revealing cracks, glazing, or fraying along belt edges requires replacement. If your steering suddenly becomes very heavy, the belt may have broken completely. We recommend inspecting power steering belts every 30,000 miles and replacing them at the first sign of wear.
